The commentators 11-06-14...on educationEven though none of the ‘Trojan Horse’ schools were faith-based, it is clear that importing the US First Amendment is the simplest solution to this problem. If Mr Gove legislated to outlaw religious affiliation, whatever the religion, from state education, he would take a useful first step towards resolving the mystery by giving us one tangible British value to be proud of.
- Matthew Norman, Independent I have tried and failed to think of another country where it would be considered in any way controversial to propose that schools be required to build their education around that nation's values.
- Ross Clark, Express ![]() It is an anomaly to allow publicly funded schools to choose their intake, overtly or covertly, on religious background only. No other state-funded institution is exempt from the Equality Act. There would be an outcry if there were exclusively Jewish, Catholic or Muslim NHS hospitals
- Alice Thomson, The Times Teaching is a vocation, a calling to human service, whose members should aid colleagues under pressure. Education is now slithering, like the NHS, into a state of constant upheaval, the political reorganisation of failure. Yet through every novelty – mergers, chains, sponsors, contractors – runs the steel of national control. As long as Whitehall tries to run all England's schools, they will be awash with bad news and there will be Birminghams galore. Gove may pose as an enemy of the state; he is truly its most dogged imperialist.
- Simon Jenkins, The Guardian Psychologists tell us that if we put a group of like-minded people in a room they become more like-minded. Their views become entrenched and even hostile to others. In a school environment, the best insurance against this is to make sure teachers are recruited openly, without reference to faith or background; that governors represent the whole community, not a small section of it; and that the pupils come from the widest set of backgrounds.
