The commentators 22-08-14...on James FoleyIt is imperative that James Foley’s murder does not weaken the resolve of those who are challenging Isis’ designs on subordinating much of the Middle East region to the rule of a dictatorial Caliphate. A robust regional reaction to their continued crimes is also absolutely necessary
- Benedict Greening, The Independent David Cameron wants Britain to stay out of Iraq. “We are not going to get involved … no boots on the ground … no sending in the British army.” Assuming he means it, he is right. He is right to focus Britain’s response to Islamic State (Isis) on humanitarian aid. He is right not to abandon his holiday, which would merely suggest that Iraq is Britain’s responsibility, encouraging the laptop bombardiers, jingo editorialists and jobless soldiers who have a field day at times like this
- Simon Jenkins, The Guardian David Cameron only arrived in London late on Wednesday morning and is still resisting mounting pressure to recall Parliament to discuss the carnage in the Middle East. Yet after chairing a meeting of Cobra, the Government’s crisis committee, and slipping into a suit and tie to give some television interviews, by yesterday lunchtime he was in holiday mode again. Everybody back on the beach!
- Richard Littlejohn, Daily Mail We can and must defeat and roll back the Caliphate of the hatred-consumed IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in its own homeland. It is more fragile than it looks but only for now. It attracts little lasting loyalty from the tribes and none from the Shia. Its money will run out - its lost tanks, guns and Humvees cannot be replaced. It attracts thousands of foreign volunteers but only while it is winning. It has not yet met well-armed enemies such as the Turks and Kurds.
- Frederick Forsyth, Daily Express As long as Western governments remain divided on whether to pay to save the lives of their citizens, many of those whose work takes them to hazardous areas will, unfortunately, continue to be hostages to fortune
- Kim Sengupta, The Independent If we label them as “terrorists” and “militants” instead of just plain nutters, we play to their showmanship and vanity and assist their recruitment efforts. We need to be more selective with language in a way that does not detract from the heinousness of Foley’s murder, but also in a way that avoids lending any self-claimed glory to his killers
- Gautam Malkani, Financial Times Enthusiasts for multi-culturalism love to blather about tolerance, yet it is richly ironic that their pernicious creed has promoted intolerance, misogyny and reactionary oppression. In predominantly Muslim areas diversity means the triumph of the burka, sharia law, fundamentalism in state schools and a reluctance to speak English
- Leo McKinstrey, Daily Express
