Britain raises its terror alert status to the highest level yet in response to the perceived threat from Isis.
Police start an international search for Ashya King, a six-year-old boy suffering from a brain tumour, after his parents remove him from Southampton hospital without telling staff.
An independent inquiry concludes that Rotherham council and South Yorkshire police showed "blatant" failings in doing little or nothing to help up to 1,400 girls who were sexually abused and forced into prostitution by Asian gangs over a 12-year period. The inquiry was set up after the persistent reporting of Andrew Norfolk of the Times, whose efforts over the past four years have earned him the Paul Foot prize, the Orwell prize and the BJA award for journalist of the year.
