The commentators 23-07-14...on flight MH17The stain of guilt extends to Germany, France and Italy, whose leaders have disgracefully done so little to bring the Russian leader and his fellow Kremlin gangsters to heel. Whenever urged by the international community to punish Russia by imposing economic sanctions, the heads of these three governments have put their own countries’ prosperity before a defence of Western democratic values and, indeed, human life.
- Simon Heffer, Daily Mail Germany is too tolerant of Mr Putin’s muscle play. Worth remembering: its foreign minister, the social democrat Frank-Walther Steinmeier, is the former right-hand man of Gerhard Schröder, the ex-chancellor, who found a retirement job with Gazprom. The German way has been to bring the two sides of the Ukrainian argument together and persuade both to make concessions.
- Roger Boyes, The Times The UK should boycott the 2018 Russian World Cup for the victims of MH17. We should refuse to send our players to the tournament, and send a clear message to the Kremlin that we do not stand for Russia’s aggressive expansionism. By sending our players to the 2018 Russian World Cup, we would be validating the Russian state, and handing Putin a powerful propaganda coup. What message would it send to the MH17 victim's families if we do play in the tournament?
